The most populous city in Russia with a population of 11,514,330 inhabitants, Moscow is the capital of Russia. Moscow is also the 7th largest metropolitan area in the world as well as a major political, economic, cultural, religious, educational, and commercial center in Russia. In 1156, Rostov Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy constructed a wall that indicated the borders of Moscow. A few years later, the city was attacked by the Mongols and revived in 1327 by the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. The government of Moscow was officially instituted in 1905 with Alexander Adrianov as Mayor. However in 1917, the Russian Revolution broke out which resulted to the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the USSR. Following the division of the Soviet Union, Moscow remained as the capital of Russia. The cityscape of the city includes buildings and landmarks that serve as main tourist attractions such as the Shukov Tower, the Novodevichy Convent (listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites), Gorky Park, and the Elk Island National Park, among others.
