St. Petersburg is a city in Russia that was reanmed Petrograd in 1914 and Leningrad in 1924, then back to Saint Petersburg in 1994. In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great built the city as part of his historic effort to Westernize Russia and it remained the capital until 1918. With more than 4 million inhabitants, Saint Petersburg forms one of the most important cities in the world and is the most westernized among Russian cities. The city is also home to the largest museum in the world, The Hermitage. Although it has a relatively low skyline, St. Petersburg boasts of classic architecture such as Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Okhta Center, the Saint Petersburg Mosque, Menshikov Palace, the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg. Related Groups of Monuments and the Leningrad Oblast are both considered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Saint Petersburg plays a major role in the world’s cultural heritage. It houses more than 50 theaters as well as popular for its literature tradition. A number of Russian writers are internationally recognized for their contributions to literature such as Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Brodsky, and Gogol. Universities in Saint Petersburg include Saint Petersburg State University with 32,000 students, Saint Petersburg Polytechnical University, Herzen University, and Saint Petersburg Military Engineering Technical University.
International students share their study program experiences in the city. “I wish my courses had incorporated more of St. Petersburg and its culture,” according to one student (CIEE Russia: St. Petersburg). “I made such amazing friends on the trip,” writes an appreciative student (Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP). “I gained a lot from living among the students in the dorm,” comments another student from the St. Petersburg State University Language Program. “Good but need to know a good amount of Russian,” evaluates another (Nevsky Institute Princeton in St. Petersburg). read less
