Nicknamed “Athens of the North” because of its major role in the Age of Enlightenment, Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. Edinburgh is along the east coast of the Central Belt, southeast of Scotland and close to the North Sea. In 1995, districts of the Old Town and New Town were listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and currently, Edinburgh has 4,500 buildings listed. The Scottish Census reports that the city has an estimate population of 486,120 in 2010. During the reign of King James VI in 1603, Scotland became an independent state of the United Kingdom with the Parliament located in Edinburgh. The city has a lot to offer ranging from its rich Medieval architecture and Celtic tradition. The Edinburgh Festival, showcasing grand theater production and music performances, is the best-known celebration in the city. Scottish architecture is also a key feature of the city such as the Edinburgh Castle, the Museum of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Festival Theater, and the National Gallery of Scotland to name a few.
