After the Korean War, South Korea began a highly successful effort to build a modern higher education system. The South Korean system has produced major global competitors in technology, research and manufacturing, including Samsung and Daewoo. South Korea universities and firms excel in science and technology, particularly robotics and biotechnology. Other South Korean academic institutions include industrial universities, junior colleges, Air and Correspondence University, seminaries, technical colleges, universities of education, and other various post-secondary schools.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010 ranks 4 Korean universities in the top 200: Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and Yonsei University. The Institute of International Education reports that South Korea is the 25th most visited study abroad destination worldwide for American students.

Study abroad students who treasured their Korean experience shared their reviews on RateMyStudyAbroad.com. “We learned calligraphy, made pottery, visited temples, did traditional Korean drumming, amongst many other things,” recalled one student from Ajou International Summer School. Another student from the same program shares, “The Jeju trip, the mud festival and visiting the JSA and actually stepping across the border to North Korea are definitely experiences that will not (soon) be forgotten.”
