A mega city and the largest metropolis in the Korean peninsula, Seoul is the capital of South Korea. Seoul has a population of more than 10 million, almost half of the whole country demographics. The city is South Korea’s seat of economic, political, and cultural power. The city’s origins can be traced to over 2,000 years ago when in 18 BC one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea established Seoul as the capital until the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites includes four areas in Seoul – Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine, and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Present-day Seoul is one of the world’s leading cities and included in the 10 global cities of the Global Cities Index 2010. The city was hailed as the 6th most established economy in the world by Forbes Magazine in 2008.

Historical and modern architecture forms the city’s cultural landmarks such as the Five Grand Palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, the National Folk Museum of Korea, shopping centers in Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market, the N Seoul Tower, the Tower Palace, the Korea Finance Building, and the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Prestigious universities are also located in Seoul such as the Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. The Korean Ministry of Education is emphasizing its goal towards development in higher education through the “National Project toward Building World Class Universities” which also aims to improve international rankings of Korean universities.
