Barcelona’s etymology can be traced to the Iberian Phoenician word “Barkeno” and later in the Medieval period became known as Barchelona and Barchenona. Interesting sights perched in Barcelona include the Barri Gotic, which is the city’s old capital, the famous Sagrada Familia church, the Colombus Monument, the National Museum of Art in Catalonia, and the Barcelona Pavilion. There are also various world-class museums, churches, beaches, and parks at the heart of the city.

Equally worth meriting is the city’s education sector. Barcelona’s higher education system is internationally recognized. The system of public universities includes the most prominent University of Barcelona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the Pompeu Fabra University, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Other private institutions consist of IESE Business School, the Ramon Llull University which covers another prestigious school – the ESADE Business School. In 2008, the Loughborough University’s Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network hailed Barcelona as the world’s leader in tourism, economy, culture, sports, commerce, education, fashion, science, the arts, and recognized its influences to other cities.
