Dar Es Salaam, formerly named Mzizima, is the capital of Tanzania. The city is the seat of major government institutions and serves as the country’s commercial and economic hub. Dar Es Salaam began as a small fishing village in the 19th century and in 1887, the German East Africa Company established a commercial center resulting to a major commercial development. With a population of 2.8 million inhabitants, Dar Es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest city. It is also an important city for the country’s business and government. The city is also a tourist destination with must-see sites including the Village Museum, the Botanical Garden, the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve, and the Saint Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

Important colleges and universities of the country are also located in Dar Es Salaam. The University of Dar Es Salaam is the largest and biggest public university in Tanzania, built in 1966. Other universities include Ardhi University (2613 student population), Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (the city’s main research center), the Open University of Tanzania (distance learning dedicated to international students), the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, International Medical and Technological University, and the Kampala International University (established in 2009).
