The Bulgarian culture - historically a crossroads of East and West- helps set the atmosphere for the Lab's interaction. And the secluded charm of Smolyan and its surroundings - located just north of the border with Greece, approximately forty kilometers from the Aegean Sea - serves as the perfect base. The RITC was an incredible experience. So much of your time in the Rhodopis - a gorgeous, magical place - is taken up by some of the most rigorous summer theater training you can find. The real gift of the Collective is the people. There are professors, students, professionals from around world - Bulgarians, Tibetans, Italians, Indians and Americans, etc. - all living and working together making theater. I recently finished my first large-scale directing assignment; I found myself constantly drawing from all sorts of things I learned from the Collective. Lectures, creative projects, movement workshops, the production of THE BACCHAE, and dinner talk all influenced and inspired me throughout the process.
