Established more than 400 years ago on the site of the ancient Mayan city of T'ho, Mérida now has a population of more than 500,000. The beaches of the Gulf of Mexico are a short drive away, and open-air concerts, folk performances, and art exhibitions abound within the city. Mérida is the "sister city" of New Orleans and boasts similar architectural features and pleasant, tree-lined plazas.
