Los Angeles is home to 3,792,621 inhabitants, making it the most populous city in California and the most diverse the United States. As of 2008, Los Angeles has a GDP of $700 billion, making it the 3rd largest city economy in the world, following Tokyo and New York. The home of Hollywood, it is often dubbed as the “World’s Entertainment Capital” with world-class television, music, and motion picture productions. The origin of Los Angeles goes back to 1781 when Felipe de Neve, a Spanish governor, established a city. And in 1850, LA became a municipality of California. Today, downtown Los Angeles is an established metropolis with developed sectors of society. Landmarks situated in the city include the Kodak Theater, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Griffith Observatory, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Bowl, Watts Tower, and many others.

Popularly known as LA, the city is considered an international center in trade, business, media, culture, fashion, science, technology, and education. Several higher learning institutions are located in Los Angeles. These include the California State University, UCLA, Northridge, American Film Institute Conservatory, Alliant International University, Syracuse University, American Jewish University, Antioch University, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Marymount College, University of Southern California, National University of California, Otis College of Art and Design, and various private and community colleges.
