Study culture, environment, and peacebuilding using Kenya as an in-depth case study. This course examines the nexus of local culture, language, history, and environment to better understand why conflict erupts and how it can be transformed into peace. You will explore these issues through insights from cultural studies, linguistics, peace and conflict studies and environmental science, as you learn about local conditions in Kenya, how they form part of global patterns and the array of tools and strategies for sustainable peacebuilding. A number of educational visits and tours across the country will provide you with a rich and empirical appreciation of specific challenges, including language politics, human/wildlife conflicts, and on-the-ground government and local community responses to these challenges. Students from Kenyatta University in Nairobi may join the class, providing opportunities to work together to do research and conduct informational interviews with NGOs in Nairobi. Home to many international organizations, including the UN Office in Africa, Nairobi is an established hub for development, business, and culture. Less
