Our 6th Franklin Residential College seminar on the culture and ecology of Costa Rica counts for 3 credits from the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI). The seminar meets weekly beginning in January to prepare for the Spring Break trip to Costa Rica on March 12th. They will then have 3 sessions after their trip. While at the UGA Costa Rica campus in San Luis de Monteverde, the students partake in various activities, working with the resident naturalists and other staff, including: nature hikes (including night hikes); exploring the UGA ethno-botanical garden and plant and insect identification workshops; and Spanish language practice. The group also visits Monteverde, including visits to various attractions: ziplines, women's arts and crafts cooperative, and a cheese and ice cream factory. On one evening, the students will stay overnight with a local family. The last two days of the trip are spent at the beach in Playa Sámara, including surf lessons. The group returns to Atlanta on Sunday, March 18th. Students are required to keep a journal related to their participation in the program, and must give a presentation upon their return. Less
