During this program, students will be based in the community of Palmares, about an hour drive west of San Jose, the capital city. For the first few nights, students will stay at the Hotel Don Carlos in San Jose and go by bus each day to Palmares to plan with the local teachers. The group will then move to homestays in Palmares for the two weeks we'll be running the science activities in Palmares. The program will also explore other regions of Costa Rica on field excursions. Activities included on the excursions are an integral part of the overall study abroad experience, as students will learn about Costa Rican ecology, ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, and more. We'll stay at a hotel in Manuel Antonio for 2 nights over the weekend when we're at the beach and will learn about Manuel Antonio National Park. Students will raft the Pacuare River and learn about conservation efforts along that river. At the end of the program, students will stay at the UGA Costa Rica campus in San Luis de Monteverde and learn about sustainable coffee and local conservation efforts, participate in UGA Costa Rica's carbon offset program, go zip lining and visit the San Luis waterfall with UGA Costa Rica's Resident Naturalists. The program will wrap up at a local hotel near Arenal Volcano with activities around the volcano and Lake Arenal. Less
