Lancaster University was founded in 1964 and its main campus is 3 miles from the city center of Lancaster, England. The campus is situated on 250 acres of parkland and on a clear day the view extends north to the Lakeland fells and west across Morecambe Bay. Alexandra Square, at the heart of campus, provides a focus for the life of the University--the administration building, student union, library, shops, and banks. Approximately 10,000 students study at Lancaster and 17% of its student body is comprised of overseas students. One of the popular features of Lancaster is that it requires all students to join a College. Students and staff stay in the same College throughout their university career, and it becomes a focal point for their academic and social life. Elected officers organize dinners, dances, films, and other social events throughout the year, and there are good-humored inter-College competitions in sport and debating. The eight undergraduate University Colleges are named after regions connected with Lancashire: Bowland, Cartmel, County, Furness, Fylde, Grizedale, Lonsdale, and Pendle. Lancaster University maintains a theater studio, art gallery, and concert hall and there are numerous pubs and eating places on campus. Students can participate in a number of organizations and clubs and the
university is well- equipped for sports (soccer, hockey, football, rugby, rock climbing, archery, swimming, tennis, cricket, squash, aerobics, and weight-training). Less
