The University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences (previously KVL) was founded in 1858. It has 3500 students and it is situated in the heart of Copenhagen, a modern European city of more than one million people with roots stretching back to the twelfth century. Copenhagen is characterized by spires of copper, narrow medieval streets, small specialty shops, and a plethora of cozy cafes. The city center is traversed by canals and surrounding the city is a beautiful harbor. StrYget, the world's longest pedestrian street, cuts through the city center.
The buildings of KVL were designed by the leading Danish architects of the day, and provide the campus with a truly classic atmosphere. A number of museums, beautiful parks, and recreational facilities are not far from the campus, making it an ideal place to sample culture or go for a leisurely stroll. The university has four experimental farms, including one organically run, and an arboretum in Hoersholm that has the biggest collection of indoor and outdoor trees and bushes in Denmark. VLI-sports is a sports club for students and staff run by its members, with opportunities for playing badminton, basketball, football, handball, volleyball, and participating in gymnastics, folk dance, and swimming.
