I could never have afforded to study abroad...
I could never have afforded to study abroad through a program provider, besides which I enjoyed the independence of going it alone. Of course it helped that there were five other students from my home university who were there with me! But we had to make all of our own arrangements, in terms of working out how to get from the airport in Madrid to Salamanca, finding accommodation (we were encouraged to live in share housing with local students, no one participated in a home stay), registering for classes, completing the student visa registration etc. It was a baptism by fire, and there were definitely some challenging moments, but it was ultimately much more rewarding than having someone hold your hand through the whole experience.
Salamanca is a great place to study - a classic university town, with students out partying every night of the week until four or five in the morning. Fortunately there is always you can always have a siesta to recover from the night before! You will meet students from all over Spain, and all over Europe, studying through the Erasmus program. In the summer the city does tend to get taken over by American students. There is beautiful architecture, great cultural activities, easy access to nearby cities and Portugal.
