Perfect Balance in Nagasaki
I went to Nagasaki completely lacking of any Japanese language skills, but that didn't harbor my experience. The friends I made, my host family, and the supportive staff of NUFS aided me to the best of their abilities. The city is wonderful, not to big, but enough of a mix of students and different cultures. The program is continually improving, and the staff constantly appreciates feedback and comments.
As for academics, don't expect too much. NUFS isn't a huge university, and the English teachers are fairly laid back. In my book, this is a good thing, since it allows for more time for exploration of the city.
I think this program is a good pick for anyone who wants to experience a different culture, Asia, or even just to meet people from around the world. Japan is not what I had first imagined-- it's so much better. I can't wait to go back!!

Living Situation
I stayed with a Japanese family, and it was easily the best part of the program. My host parents encouraged my learning of the language and expansion of my knowledge. They were understanding of differences that we had, and were supportive in everything I did. I can't wait to go back and see them again!

Safety
I walked home very early in the morning a few times, and still felt incredibly safe. Even if I became lost, I had no fear of the people or the culture.

Health Service
Because you'll receive a student visa, you'll also be signed up for Japan's national health care. Although the Japanese are slightly hypochondriacs, medications are pretty cheap!

City Life
The Monkey Wrench in Sumiyoshi is always a hoppin' place for international students. The owner and the regulars all speak decent English, and are eager to help out with any cultural misunderstandings that may occur (like reservations, bill splitting, etc). The best times that I had were literally getting lost on the back roads and discovering hidden shrines and restaurants. Nagasaki has immaculate public transportation, like the rest of Japan, so getting anywhere is never a problem.
