Seville Study Center Experience of a lifetime, unforgettable.
Reviewed by Alicia B. on .
Sevilla is a beautiful city with even better weather. Learn the European version of the Christopher Colombus tale. Dance Flamenco with the gypsies, go to the summer Feria in style. Meet locals strolling the streets each night (La Movida!!)
Eat Manchego cheese and JAMON!! Drink Sangria, lots and lots of Sangria. Study the history of the Moorish empire that left Sevilla with beautiful architecture and tile that keeps you cool in the summer.
Bullfights, matadors, and Spanish fans. Did you know that the guys who made the Macarena song actually live in a barrio in Sevilla called "La Macarena" after a local patron saint?
Holy week. Something you must witness to understand. Processions also occur randomly throughout the year, at night with music and floats bearing the locan patron saints.
It's totally worth every penny you spend!! -

I studied abroad with this program back in 2003 and it was one of the most memorable times of my life. My host family was hospitable and made me feel as part of their family. I took all my courses in Spanish and found the courses to be very challenging. I highly recommend this program for students interested in Studying abroad in Sevilla.

This program was great. I lived in a great home stay, took all my courses in Spanish, and brought my Spanish from conversational to near fluent. The program was full of diverse students and all the teachers and administrators were very helpful and knowledgeable. Sevilla itself is one of the coolest cities in the world. Chalk full of history, fun, partying, and southern Spain at its best. I'd highly recommend this program.

Overall,
I did learn a lot about the Spanish culture and their way of life. I did get to try many new things and see beautiful places that will remain in my memories forever. As for the program it could be way better. Looking back, as it was over 4 years ago, I have now graduated and started my career I have never regreted my decision to study abroad, maybe I should have explored my options more but I did have a fantastic time and yes I do plan to go back and visit. In the long run it was the unorganization of the program that lead to it's demise. So like I said, if you are looking for a party program and don't want to learn Spanish this is the program for you. -
Seville Study Center Best Experience Ever
Reviewed by Aimee on .
Going abroad with UW-P was the best decision I ever made! I was a Spanish major in college and really needed an immersion program to improve my verbal skills. All my classes were in Spanish (except Mouments of Seville...a great class to see the city, ps)The teachers were wonderful and I learned an incredible amount (and got a full semester worth of credit!) The city is beautiful and there was always something to see and do. I would absolutely recommend the program and would do it all over again if I could (oh how I really wish I could!)...GREAT PROGRAM OVERALL!

I had an amazing semester in Spain. I loved my senora and the class I took. I traveled to a different town in Spain almost every weekend and really got a good feel of the country. I can't wait to go back! There were a few problems, nothing is perfect, but overall I loved it.

Seville Study Center Love This Program

Going abroad has been the best experience of my life thus far. I couldn't have asked for a better study abroad experience. I stayed with a host family and took all of my classes, which really helped with cultural immersion. The staff at SAIIE is so kind, helpful and knowledgeable. They make a huge effort to make all of the material relevant to better your cultural experience. The program directors work closely with students to make sure everyone gets the most out of their study abroad experience. I had a great experience with my senora. Just sitting and talking to her really helped me learn a lot more about Spanish culture. The program works together with a school in Seville too, so you can volunteer as a tutor and talk with Spanish kids of most ages. I absolutely love Seville as a study abroad destination. It's a big city but feels as comfortable as a small town. There's always so much to do and see. The people in Seville don't always speak much English, which really helps to immerse you in the Spanish language and improve your speaking. Overall, I am more than satisfied with this program and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to all of my family and friends!

I really loved this program. It is smaller program than many others offered in the city. You get smaller class sizes, and more one on one attention. The faculty and administration are amazing and really. I would do this program all over again if I could.

Seville Study Center Español Extravaganza

My time in Sevilla, Spain most certainly changed my entire career in Spanish: it was the turning point for me! I finally gained the confidence I needed to SPEAK Spanish, not just read or write it. Of course, as I am now a high school Spanish teacher, such confidence is critical:) Thank you for setting me up with a kind family, superb educators, and friendly administrators. This was a life-changing experience to be sure!

Seville Study Center Good for beginner to intermediate speakers
Reviewed by Carolyn Kirchhoff on .
This is a good program for students with basic to medium proficiency in Spanish. You go to class with native teachers, but all other students are American. If you are looking for a more challenging speaking and learning environment or you are a highly proficient Spanish speaker, I would advise shopping around. Don't get me wrong, I loved my study abroad experience and it is the single most influential choice I made in my college career that has impacted my life. But in terms of academics, connecting with the culture of Spain, and improving my Spanish skills, this probably wouldn't be the program I would choose in hindsight.

Seville Study Center A Well Worth Experience

Studying abroad in Spain has greatly helped me learn Spanish as well as learning more about the culture. The family that I lived with was fabulous. My Señora made delicious food and if I didn't like something she didn't mind making me something else. Since my Spanish wasn't that great I was very nervous to talk to my Señora, but she was very patient with me and I became more confident with my speaking. The classes were reasonable; they knew that we wanted to learn as well as travel. I loved taking the art history class about Sevilla because it gave me more information about where I was living and more about the culture. If I could go back and do it again I totally would!

Seville Study Center Incredibly fun cultural immersion with a lack of academic rigor...
Reviewed by Zach Green on .
This was one of the most formative experiences of my life. Sevilla is incredibly culturally rich and the UWP program allowed for a lot of freedom to explore the city, country and continent. My only complaints would be: A.) that the food and living situation (with a big poor family in a small apartment) which was cramped, far and occasionally contentious probably due mostly to my own laziness, lack of good Spanish and messy student habits. B.) that the courses where very, very easy and the students were often poorly behaved, disrespectful and disruptive to the teachers who actually seemed to want to push the group harder but ultimately were forced to dump down exams I imagine given the lack of focus from most students. In the end the ease of the course work allowed us to spend more time living and experiencing life in Sevilla which in some ways is what going abroad is all about. Still, I can understand why the credit but not the grades transferred to my home university.

Seville Study Center A once in a lifetime experience:)

My semester abroad in Sevilla, Spain was an absolutely incredible experience! I not only learned about the Spanish culture and language, but I also learned so much about myself which is what I think many people experience with an opportunity like this. I was fortunate enough to take advantage of several trips that were school based as well as excursions that I planned on my own with friends, and the traveling that I did was incredibly memorable. One of my favorite trips was to Morrocco, Africa with a group called Discover Sevilla. The trip was life-changing along with my entire semester abroad. After returning home, I found that I had a new appreciation for my life and the world around me. Any program you choose will be worthwhile if you jump into it with enthusiasm, but on the days where you get a little homesick, Sevilla was the perfect city to bring your spirits up with just a walk around your barrio or to the Cathedral. The history behind it all is simply fascinating. Happy Travels, and whether you choose to study in Sevilla or not, just be sure to study abroad somewhere!!!:)

If you want to learn the Spanish language, are interested in traveling throughout Spain and Europe, and have an open mind to new experiences then this program is for you! I had an AMAZING overall experience throughout my semester studying abroad in Seville, Spain. The teachers were some of the best teachers that I have ever had. They were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and really cared about the progress of their students. I was able to apply the knowledge that I learned in my classes in a variety of social situations with Spaniards. You will fall in love with the way of life in Sevilla: amazing and unique spanish food, outstanding entertainment, friendly and fun natives, spanish siestas, and, of course, cerveza. I loved this program so much that I am returning in September 2012 to teach English. I highly recommend that everybody studies abroad sometime in their college career, and if you're interested in Spanish and Europe, then this is the PERFECT program for you.

Studying abroad with SAIIE was a wonderful experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It's nice that it wasn't a huge school, so they could spend more quality time getting to know their students. Living with a host family is something I wouldn't trade. You learn a lot with that experience alone. Not only will you improve your Spanish skills, but you'll learn a ton about the culture too!

My study abroad experience opened my eyes to a whole new world! By living with a host family in Spain, I was completely immersed in the culture, food, and traditions. Through a partnering program with local Spainards, I learned the language and made wonderful friends. This program felt tight knit so it was easy to get to know other students. They organized optional weekend trips to other cities which were a blast and also gave us the flexibility to travel on our own. This is a wonderful program choice for studying abroad and I cherish the memories I made and experiences that were presented to me. I would encourage every college student to study abroad because it is an experience unlike any other!!

I had the time of my life during my semester abroad. I met a lot of new people, American, Spanish and others, and made lifelong friends. My Señora was nothing short of wonderful and the academic program was engaging and very experiential. I would recommend the program to any student, not just those studying Spanish, as I myself was not a Spanish major or minor. A program such as this will change your perspective in the best way possible.

This program provides the wonderful life experience of living in another country: learning the language and culture, and provides opportunities to visit both sites within Sevilla and in other European cities. There is not as much emphasis on schooling, which allows students more time to spend on travelling and learning/enjoying European culture.

Seville Study Center Best Academic Decision I've Made
Reviewed by SarahO. on .
I spent the spring semester of 2006 in Sevilla, and it truly blew me away. So much so that I HAD to return the following spring. So I spent a total of 1 year there and it was honestly the best year of my life. I have very few criticisms of the program at the Spanish-American Institute. The class sizes were small, which was an awesome change from back home. I really felt like all of the professors not only were experts in their fields, but they definitely had a passion for teaching exchange students and making sure our experience was the best it could possibly be. They said that they had a "no English" policy in the school common areas, which would have been pretty effective had it been enforced. The 2 host families I had were as sweet as can be and truly made me feel at home from day 1. The school had multiple weekly activities set up, many of which were free, that allowed us to explore the city more and experience the culture. If any student of this program can say that they didn't get enough cultural immersion, then they had to have been actively avoiding it. Like I said, I took advantage of this program not once, but twice, and I would do it again if I could! Hands down, best year of my life!

Seville Study Center Becoming a global citizen
Reviewed by emilykatedale on .
As I look at my Christmas tree with small ornaments of trinkets from around the world and reflect upon the many memories of world travels and international relationships in my life, I realize that it all began with my study abroad experience at the Spanish American Institute in Sevilla, Spain, through UW Platteville. As a college student with limited financial resources and opportunities, the study abroad experience in Sevilla was a life changing experience for me. The program served as a spring board for me to become the global citizen that I've become. I was able to learn about Spanish language, history, culture and folklore, both academically and out of the classroom while studying in Sevilla. The professors were empassioned teachers; the host families were selfless and warm families who gracioulsy opened their doors to us; and the program administrators were hard-working people who truly facilitated outstanding learning experiences that can only happen while studying abroad. I developed a passion for all things "Spanish," a curiosity about world cultures, and an insatiable hunger for more. In the ten-plus years since studying abroad as a college student, I have gone on to receive a master's degree in global health, and have visited numerous countries, communities, and families around the world through my career in international health and development. I believe I have the UW Platteville Sevilla program to thank, for starting me on the path of becoming a global citizen.
