Tasmania is Australia's stunningly beautiful island state. Both Hobart and Launceston, Tasmania's two largest cities, have airport providing easy and fast access to Sydney and Melbourne. Exploring the island of Tasmania will astound you. The beauty of the high country is reflected in the jagged mountain peaks, pristine lakes and raging rivers. The East Coast, with its brilliant white beaches and aqua blue water, will simply stun. If surfing in summer and skiing in winter is not enough then try whitewater rafting on the Picton River or rock-climbing the Organ Pipes of Mount Wellington for an exhilirating experience.
UTAS offers Study Abroad and Exchange students a choice between Hobart and Launceston. Travel time between the two campuses is approximately 2.5 hours by car, and each campus has it's own distinct characteristics.
Hobart
Hobart is the capital and largest city in Tasmania, yet it is free from overcrowding, traffic congestion, serious pollution and major crime. Situated close to the mouth of the Derwent River and nestled in the foothills of Mount Wellington, it seems that nearly every home, office and classroom has a magnificent view. In Hobart you are always meeting someone new, yet frequently bump into someone you know.
The University's Hobart campus is set in the suburb of Sandy Bay within walking distance to the city centre. Much of the upper campus is in natural bushland. Closer to the city centre are the Clinical School, the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, and the prestigious School of Art. The School of Fine Arts is housed in a renovated jam factory overlooking the harbour and takes full advantage of its historic location and spectacular setting.
Around 11,000 students are enrolled at the Hobart campus. The academic strengths of the Hobart campus include Aboriginal Studies, Antarctic Studies, Fine Arts, Geography & Environmental Studies, Law, Journalism & Media Studies and Zoology.
Launceston
Launceston is the major city in the north of the state nestled amongst rolling hills and vineyards and is conveniently located close to popular wilderness areas such as Cradle Mountain and the Asbestos Ranges National Park. The Gorge in Launceston is also a popular place for students to explore with its walking trails and swimming holes.
For students who are seeking a smaller campus (about 4,000 students) with more personalised classes, Launceston is the place to be. Study Abroad students report that the low number of Americans on this campus is an asset. They find themselves surrounded by more Australian friends than any other American students they know.
Academically the Launceston campus is set apart with the following: Aquaculture, Architecture, Education, Nursing and Performing Arts.
